Pleasantly surprised
I love the old versions of Ghost. I think the last good one was 2003. Symantec has a habit of buying up companies that actually make good software (e.g., PowerQuest) and turning said software into a steaming pile or just letting it bit rot. I hate all this activation crap they do now (and no, I'm not a pirate). It really makes it hard to use software as the TOOLS they are suppose to be when they are locked to one machine. I mean, really, how many times do you need to use a partition tool on one machine (and why should I have to re-purchase it again and again, just to use it once). As a software engineer, I use tools to FIX computers. A carpenter doesn't purchase a new hammer for every project he builds.
Anyways, for the above reasons, I haven't bought a new version of Ghost since version 9 (the first requiring activation, but luckily came with a copy of 2003). I like back software that I can boot to and not perturbate the drive I am trying to backup! Recently I saw that version 15 was less then $30. Then I learned that they actually restored the ability to backup from the booted CD (this is why competition is a good thing!). Since it was so cheap, I figured I would take a chance. You have to enter the CD's serial number to be able to backup, but I think that is an OK compromise. You STILL have to go try activation when you install it, but I never plan to do that. I will just boot to the CD and backup. Speaking of which, the Window's environment booted from the CD has a nice set of tools (networking, virus scanning). It simplistic, but a nice addition to one diagnostic tool kit.
Since the boot environment is a modern OS (2003 booted to DOS), it is a lot easier to backup a drive. With 2003, I used an external USB hardware that I put a small, bootable DOS partition on, and one large NTFS. I would boot to this, and backup to the NTFS partition which I would later move to a more permanent backup drive. With 15.0, I can just boot to the CD, and insert any USB drive and backup to it or even to a networked drive.
All in all, it is an acceptable tool. Would be better if I could install it and make full use of it without this DRM crap, but it is better than nothing. I would try Acronis, but they have activation, too. I think in the future, I will move to a Linux solution.
Bought on name against advice
I'am not a computer expert and all I want to do is run a few programs and make sure I have them backed up without spending a lot of time on the computer. Norton Ghost is not very user friendly, shows have error but does not show how to help or solve it. I should have took the advice of the others on the web and bought a different brand.
Does Not Work With NAS
I decided to finally do a good job of backing up my home computers and bought a QNAP TS-110 NAS and installed a Hitachi 2 TB drive. I already had an external SATA drive which I increased in size to 2 TB also. I have the system working well and can share folders and have mapped network drives between the computers and the NAS. So it is time to install Ghost 15.0.
The installation works well but when I set up a backup I can't access the NAS shared folder for the back-up. I keep getting a error: "Multiple connections to a server or shared resource by the same user, using more than one user name, are not allowed.". It turns out that Ghost has to access the NAS using a user name that does not come from the PC being backed-up. I had to Un-Map all my network drives and reboot. I added a "Ghost" user name to the NAS (Nas-name) with its own password. I made a new network drive Q: with the location \\Nas-name\username; Re-connect at log-on; CONNECT USING A DIFFERENT USER NAME The user name to make the connection was "Nas-name\Ghost" and the corresponding NAS password. I then added the normal network drive connection Z: under the normal user name.
OK, I have found out how to do this after many hours when they could have provided some warning and instructions in probably 2-4 sentences. The backup completes without any errors.
I now check that I can recover the drive using the Symantec Recovery Disk (SRB). When the computer boots from the Ghost SRB it can't find the Windows network. I worked hours searching the forums and trying differnt things. The Norton technician also did a remote link for 1.5 hours and he still could not get it to function.
So I have a backup that can't be reloaded on a clean hard drive. So I have succeded in doing nothing after 20 hours of work.
The program looks like it works well for a backup to an external SATA drive (why I gave it 2 stars instead of zero)but will not work to a NAS even though the documentation states that it can.
Don't buy this worthless software!!
I have spent over 6 hours online with Norton support to copy my 40GB hard drive to a new 320GB hard drive and it still doesn't work!! All I get is the blue screen of death. They even downloaded Partition Magic to my computer and it still doesn't work. Find some other way to upgrade your hard drive.
Easy to install and use!
I wanted a product to "mirror" my hard disk on a nightly basis. I do not need any other functionality. This product was extremely easy to install (no problems at all) and very easy to set up. It has run nightly as scheduled. At this point I have not needed to reload anything from the "mirror" copy so I can not say how easily that might be. So far I'm very happy with this product.
