More of a pamphlet than a magazine - thin on content
My 5-year-old daughter and I found a whole stack of back issues of these magazines at a local library sale and snapped them up. Upon reading through some of the issues, I found that the magazine is thin on content though it is beautifully formatted with full-color illustrations/photographs. Each magazine is only about 19 pages in length. Each issue addresses a specific topic, e.g. Ancient Pompeii, the Rainforest, Machines, Germs, Ancient India, Revolutionary Women, The Civil War, WW I, etc. The magazine covers diverse content areas, such as ancient history, American history, world history, science, geography, etc. I feel that for the subscription price and the dearth of pages and content, there are many other superior publications out there, e.g.:
Muse
Calliope
Odyssey
Cobblestone

Final verdict - not much offered for the price. Check your local library instead.

Very short, not much content, lots of big pictures.
I had been getting National Geographic Kids and I was looking for something the next level up in terms of age and learning. The example on the website for Discover Kids looked like the right learning level and like it was put together well. I didn't realize that the 10 page example was the WHOLE magazine. I almost threw this out when I received it because it was so thin and looked like a piece of bulk mailing. The magazine is literally 10 pages long (double sided) and much of the space is taken up by large pictures and a full page of credits. Content is very minimal--$26.95 for 10 issues is definitely not worth it. I will be canceling my subscription and trying to get my money back.

Major Disappointment!
My 8 yr. old son waited and waited for his first subscription. What a disappointment when it finally arrived. I thought it was a brochure and almost threw it out. It is only 7 pages long. My daughters received subscriptions to American Girl and Discovery Girls and he was expecting his magazine to be comparable, but about Science subjects. On top of that they are telling me that his subscription is up in October when he only received his first one in February. I feel like we have been scammed. >:(

Report renewal scams to attorney general
This is a great magazine, one of those that parents enjoy as much as the kids - maybe more! I'd compare it to "Dig", "Ranger Rick" and "Zoobooks" in that way. "Kids' Discover" and "Dig" are maybe more appreciated by a little more older kids than "Ranger Rick" and "Zoobooks", but I say that only because animals are a great incentive to younger kids to read. It all depends on your child's reading level and enthusiasm level. We have a big basket where we keep old issues of all our magazines, because they are fun to reread.

As others have noted, there are no ads in "Kid's Discover". That is also true of the three other magazines mentioned. In a fit of insanity I once ordered a subscription to "Crayola Kids" and was totally frustrated trying to find articles amidst all the ads!!!

I also bring up "Crayola Kids" (which is now defunct, no loss) because it was on that magazine that I was hit with an unauthorized subscription. I had a one-year subscription, did not renew, and three years later a subscription "renewal" mysteriously appeared on my credit card statement. I got it credited right away and sent a letter with copies of pertinent information to the attorney general of my state, the attorney general of the magazine's state, and the editor of the magazine itself. It was small stuff, of course, it's not like an attorney general was going to investigate my little fake renewal. But I did get a call from my state's attorney general's office to commiserate.

If everybody this happened to sent a letter to the attorney general's office and there was enough of a problem, who knows, one of these companies could finally be brought to bear for this illegal activity. If they also sent a letter to the magazine editor itself, and there were enough letters, maybe the magazine would fire the billing company using illegal billings.

Please note that for most magazines, the billing activity is undertaken by third party contractor. These practices are not practices of the magazine itself, though certainly to the customer they are linked and as the magazine pays the 3rd party to take care of billing, the magazine is ultimately responsible. I remember one year a magazine to which I'd subscribed for 15 years, suddenly changed my address! The "new" address was a few blocks away from my house. My mail carrier recognized my name and kept bringing it to me anyway, always circling the incorrect address and noting it needed to be fixed. For five months I tried writing and calling the 3rd party subscription service (as indicated in the magazine), to no avail. I could be wrong, but I think one of the people I talked to was a Neanderthal.

Finally, I wrote a letter to the Editor of the magazine. I explained all the problems and my attempts to encourage correction. I ended my letter writing, "I love your magazine and I know that as editor you have nothing to do with the idiot billing company. But I am so frustrated that I am going to cancel my subscription, throwing out the baby with the bathwater, if someone doesn't fix this address."

The next issue had the correct address.

Quality content, no ads, worth keeping back issues!
I am surprised to see the low average rating on this magazine. I think it is fabulous! The issues are not thick, but remember there are no advertisements!! The topics cover information that may or may not be covered in school history and science classes. The editors understand the magazine's target audience (~7-13 years old), and the articles are accessible, but not dumbed down. Each page features colorful photographs, maps, and drawings. The back issues are useful resources for school projects.
