Editorial Reviews for  'Mountain Boy Ultimate Flyer 52-Inch Sled'

Product Description
Outside magazine called it a "steerable snow rocket." The New York Times dubbed it "an instant heirloom." Designed by a Colorado sledmaker, crafted entirely by hand, the Ultimate Flyer is an incredible sled. The whole front section pivots, so it turns far more sharply than a conventional flexible flyer. The bottom is molded plastic, not metal runners, so it floats through powder and bites through hard-packed snow or ice. The body and handle are kiln-dried birch, the handrails are willow, and the finish is marine-grade. Meets all USC and ASTM child-safety requirements. The Ultimate Flyer 52" Sled measures 52"L x 23"W x 4" H, 14 lbs. Holds up to 300 pounds.

Marketadvisory.com Product Description
At 52 inches long, this sled is 5 inches longer and 4 pounds heavier than Mountain Boy Sledworks' Original Ultimate Flyer but otherwise identical. It's built to last for generations and features a pivoting front section that allows slalom turns, 180-degree turns, and hockey stops.

The entire front section of the Ultimate Flyer pivots, allowing sharper turns than on a conventional flexible flyer.
The heirloom-style hand-crafted sled is made of thick birch planks. Hand rails are hand-carved willow, with copper ferrules between body and rails adding to the rustic look while contributing strength. Three coats of marine-grade finish protect the wood against elements.

The sled's custom-molded bottom of high-quality slippery black plastic glides along with ease, while its wide stance keeps it stable. The sturdy bottom has a wide, flat center to float on soft snow and raised rails on the edges to track precisely on hardpack. Screws are stainless steel for durability. Suitable for a child aged 3 years and up and sturdy enough to support 300 pounds, the sled measures 52 inches long x 24 inches wide x 4 inches high and weighs 16 pounds. It meets all USC and ASTM child-safety standards and carries a 1-year warranty against defects. Assembly (instructions included) is easy.

A 1-inch-thick pad with water-resistant nylon cover that fits the sled is sold separately.

About the Production of Mountain Boy Sleds
In his small, family-run workshop Huangyan, China, Yu Guanglin and his crew make by hand, paying attention to the beauty of the wood, selecting the best materials, and getting all the details right. He buys sustainably harvested birch logs, and has planks cut from them to just the right thickness. All the little pieces are used to make ornaments, and the sawdust is used to fire the wood-drying kiln, so there’s very little waste. In his shop, Mr. Yu carefully prepares all the materials: each plank is planed by hand, and each willow branch is peeled and sanded by his crew. When he assembles the sleds, he makes sure that all the parts match and have no flaws.

Mountain Boy sledmaker Brice Hoskin is fluent in Mandarin, and travels to China to inspect sleds several times a year. In Mountain Boy's long relationship working with Mr. Yu, Brice has been able to closely monitor not just the quality of the product, but also working conditions and the way the workshop is run. The 8 to 10 skilled craftsmen who work in Mr. Yu's shop have chosen his company because of its commitment to safe working conditions and dependable year-round employment. Mr. Yu provides housing for all of his workers and their families to ensure that both the work and living environments are as hospitable as possible.

Mountain Boy Sled

I purchased this sled as a birthday present for my grown son. He has two young boys and there is enough snow in Illinois to make use of the sled. It turned out to be an excellent gift as they use it to spend family time together. The sled is a beautiful wood grain. It is a little more narrow than I expected and the runners on the bottom are a wide plastic although my son feels that makes it much safer. The front steers very easily. My son and his boys are winter outdoors people and love the sled.

Colorado Sledding
We used our new Mountain Boy Ultimate 52" on our Christmas trip (2007) to Estes Park, CO. On the third trip down a hard-packed hill, our sled stopped dead with my husband on it. Looking underneath we discovered both black plastic pieces had chunks broken off and missing and cracks running from the broken sections. This occurred without striking anything with a measurable impact. It was irreparably damaged. Boy were we disappointed! Later, upon further inspection, we also discovered the middle plank of the long (lower) section cracked almost up to the pivot point. That seemed even worse than the broken undercarriage since the wood on the sled is so beautifully finished.
We contacted Mountain Boy Sleds in Silverton, CO upon our return home (to Houston) and sent them pictures of the damaged sled. Brice Hoskin,of Mountain Boy, handled the matter quickly and better than we could have hoped. Thank you, Brice.
Pros: It is the most beautiful sled I've ever seen. (We're going to hang it on the wall as a display.)
Travels at a good speed. Faster and longer distance than most other sleds.
Turns okay.
Great customer service. They care about your sledding experience.
Cons: It's heavy. Parents will be toting that thing up the hill for the kids after most every run.
The Flexible Flyer had greater speed (but we only got to use the MB on three runs, so this might not be totally fair.)
Our sled didn't turn as smoothly as we expected, but that could be that it needed time to loosen up.

I still don't have a lot of confidence in the black, plastic undercarriage and really prefer the runners like those on a Flexi-Flyer, but we bought what we bought. MB offers sleds with the metal runners if you prefer that style. If you want a beautifully crafted sled that performs on par with the Flexible Flyer, then buy this sled.

Tons of Fun!
I've had my flyer now for a couple of winters and absolutely love it. It's beautiful on display in the living room corner, and we take it up to the Cascade passes as much as we can when we stay at the lodge. I've given Mountain Boy Ultimate Flyers as gifts to friends with young kids, and there's nothing more exciting than a wintery sledding get-together. These things are fantastically fast, very well-built, and totally controllable with the steering. Beats anything I had as a kid!!

Beautiful, highly durable sled - and zippy, too!
I've tried several kinds of reclining sleds, but this one is my hands-down favorite. For one thing, it can take a spill or two and not get damaged. It's varnished, not painted, so you can see the wood grain. The birch rails are a nice touch, too. It's super stable, and turns very nicely, which is good, because this thing is FAST! Loads of fun - when we go sledding, this is the sled that everbody wants to use.
