To say there has been a lot of anticipation for Coldplay’s fourth album, Viva La Vida, is an understatement. Having enlisted legendary leftfield producer Brian Eno, borrowed their album title from a painting by renowned Mexican artist Frida Kahlo and made tantalising remarks about sonic reinvention, the world has been curious (to say the least) to hear what the ‘new’ Coldplay might sound like. Viva La Vida definitely makes some departures from the band’s usual formula, which happens to be one of the most commercially successful rock-pop blueprints of recent years. The plangent chords, emotive melodies, stadium-rock rhythms and universal lyrical concerns remain, but Martin and co. have gone out on several limbs here, incorporating instrumental tracks ("Life In Technicolour"), using subtle North African and Latin elements ("Yes", "Strawberry Swing"), and overhauling previously strict verse-chorus-verse structures in favour of slightly more avant arrangements. The old Coldplay still shine through (see tracks like "Violet Hill" and the title song) but even their classic sound feels more muscular and confident. The band’s new flourishes, cosmetic and self-conscious as they may be, are enough to make Viva La Vida a welcome break from the old routine --Danny McKenna People en Español Cuando Coldplay anunció con bombo y platillo que su cuarto disco, bajo el ambicioso título de Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends, vendría acompañado de la producción de Brian Eno, dos escenarios se convertían en posibilidad: o se trataba de su peor álbum o la obra maestra de su carrera. --Ernesto Sánchez (People en Español ) |

Get's better the more you listen. Has new sound with pleasant melody. Nothing will ever touch PARACHUTES! |

A very good sound! Better than X and Y to be honest...I really like it! |

Surprisingly good |

I can honestly say that I am not a huge Coldplay fan. I like some of their songs from their first two cds, found their last studio album dreadfully boring. I wasn't planning on checking out their latest effort VIVA LA VIDA (death and all his friends) but after hearing a bit of "Violet Hill" on the tv for an ad for iTunes and becoming hooked, I decided to check out the band's latest album. Much to my surprise I found myself enjoying the album. I think Brian Eno added a much needed oomph to the band. The band's songs have an atmospheric sound that I hadn't heard on previous albums but without losing that familiar Coldplay sound. Chris doesn't sound so whiney as he has in the past which makes the album all the more enjoyable for me. I think the band's strongest, more compelling songs are the first 4-6 songs. The reason for that lies in the infectious pop hooks. I think the melodies in the first half of the album is top notch and the strongest that the band has written in recent years. The only minor flaws with the album is repetition and predictability but overall I still give this album five stars. I just find myself constantly listening to it a few times a day. |

I still like Parachutes than any other Coldplay's album |
I like this album. I think compared to the last album, X and Y, this one has much more of Coldplay's original sound to it. Cos I think Coldplay is all about original sound. That's what makes them different than other Brit rock bands. But having said that, this album, nor any of Coldplay's albums after Parachutes, could never beat their very first album, Parachutes itself. I was kinda hoping that Coldplay would go back to something much more like Parachutes. That one was a masterpiece. But I still like Viva La Vida.
And if I would say whether or not it values my money spent, yes, it does.
My favorite song in the album? They're all my favorites, which is a good thing, cos I don't like it when only certain songs are good. |

A Welcome Deviation |

I am surprised by some of the negative reviews this album is getting. All I can say is don't believe them. This is Coldplay's best effort to date and their first really complete album. After what was an okay effort with X&Y, they have taken things in a slightly different direction with great success. The songs from top to bottom are beautiful, melodic and flawlessly produced. For me, highlights include Lovers in Japan, Strawberry Swing, Cemetaries of London, and Lost. But the whole album is great. After In Rainbows last year, and now this, fans of good music have nothing to complain about. |
