Editorial Reviews for  'You Are My Sunshine'

Marketadvisory.com
Elizabeth Mitchell is a smidge less locked into the no-frills folkie formula on You Are My Sunshine than on her debut, You Are My Flower. In fact, if you subtract the A-list collaborators (and, OK, the dulcimers, mandolins, and human beat boxes), Mitchell starts to look a lot like the female Dan Zanes. The same rootsy sensibility rules both artists’ recordings, as does a reverence for tried-and-true folk tunes ("Good Night Irene," "Skip to My Lou") and clean production. More significantly, slivers of Zane-like adventurousness shine through here: "Alphabet Dub" set the ABCs to a reggae beat; "Hey Bo Diddley" tips its hat to the rock & roll pioneer; and the kids are called in to spice up "Crawdad." Counting kids' artists who are genuinely cool still requires fewer than 10 fingers, but with Flower and Sunshine, Mitchell proves she's among the elite. --Tammy La Gorce

Customer Reviews for  'You Are My Sunshine'

lovely, relaxing and sweet music
I bought this cd for my 6 month old son. He just smiled and smiled when we listened to the clip of You are my sunshine. I enjoy it on our car rides very much! Some of the songs I remember loving and growing up with from Sesame Street, and Schoolhouse Rock.

Listening to this music is like coming home
I stumbled across this album while searching for another Brady Rymer album for my kids. My wife and I have the privilege of parenting 4 small children (our oldest just turned 5), and music is a big part of our lives.

Initially the old picture on the cover caught my eye in one of Marketadvisory's "People who bought this also bought..." suggestions. Then I saw that it had "You Are My Sunshine" on it and had to take a listen. I was immediately won over by Elizabeth Mitchell's (not to be confused with the LOST version) honest, warm, and very welcoming voice. So intimate and understated, and so absent from popular music today. Her arrangements are both simple and masterful and such that you just want to sing along.

It only took about three samples before I was completely sold and downloaded this album and "You Are My Flower," too. These became immediate hits with my family and the kids even requested to have this as their night-time music (displacing another CD that has occupied that spot for the last 4 years!).

These are great songs, very well done, and you can listen to them over and over and never get tired of it. You can listen to the samples and make your own decision, but I won't hesitate to recommend this album to my close friends, especially those with small kids.

Beautiful album!
This album not only has sweet songs that are familiar, but Elizabeth's voice is so naturally soothing. and the guitar and other music is so fun and vibrant considering it is soft music, the very first time i played it i had a smile stuck on my face through nearly every song and I still smile when i hear/sing these songs a year later! And as vain as it may sound, one of the most wonderful things about this album is that her voice is low and folksy, making it easy for me to sing along and also to sing the songs without the cd (for fun with my baby and also when he is upset). this cd calms my little guy every time he is upset and makes him smile when he hears the little kids singing and making little noises on the cd. This cd was a great blessing to me because i love singing to my baby and this album gave me a wonderful repertoire.
The only drawback for me is that a couple of the songs have somewhat sad words (not everyone cares about the words, but i do, esp since i am interested in learning songs to sing for my baby) and i don't really like singing the sad songs to him (maybe he doesn't even notice?). But the vast majority of the songs are sweet and catchy and not too babyish to where you get really sick of them.
It is a gem of an album and I feel so lucky to have stumbled upon it.

Music parents will like too!
This CD is a releif from other children's CD. It is not only good for the kids but also for the adults. Elizabeth Mitchell has a great voice and her folky style is lovely. Her music (including other Cd's) are well worth the money.

YOU ARE MY SUNSHINE
I bought this CD mainly for the song You are My Sunshine, but when I got it, it has so many other great songs on it that I know and love. It's a great CD, although the alphabet song does get fast forwarded...
