Produced by the infamous Dr. Dre with assistance from Mr. Suge Knight, Doggy Style was the first solo outing by Calvin Broadus a.k.a. Snoop Doggy Dog. Incorporating a straight gangsta vibe into the deep funk grooves pioneered by George Clinton and his Parliament-Funkadelic ensemble, Snoop and Dre dogmatically invent the "G-Funk" aesthetic. Espousing an irreverent dope, bitches, and guns mentality, Doggy Style garnered the Parental Advisory for explicit lyrics it sorely deserved. Still, Snoop's lazy-yet-acrobatic rap/drawl is distinctive and undeniably entertaining. With additional vocals from Tha Dogg Pound (Nate Dogg, Warren G, Kurupt, and Dat Nigger Daz), this disc is deceptively professional and musically quite slick. "Murder Was The Case" is practically an inner-city classic, while "Ain't No Fun" is another blunted, urban-rap anthem. Woof! --Mitch Myers |

Snoop is the most OVERRATED rapper/emcee EVER! Cats dissed MC Hammer & Vanilla Ice for their wack lyrical skills but Snoop's skills are hailed to be all that? I think not. Snoop's "Cat In The Hat" "Dr. Seuss, Mother Goose" rhymes are so corny & offensive. Snoop & Dre pulled off the biggest scam of hip hop history. It's about skills, it's about upliftment, telling a story (even if the language is harsh)that has a message, it's about being a true emcee. Snoop showed promise on "Deep Cover" but since then he's nothing more than a snake oil salesman. |

Snoop Dogg back in 1993 was the biggest thing to come out of westcoast at the time. Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre WAS westcoast and this album is the significance of the title that they held. 1993 was a classic time in Hip Hop, East Coast was dominating with classics from Nas & Wu-Tang Clan but Snoop was in a class all in his own. Dr. Dre came out with his classic debut album "The Chronic" in 1992 and he introduced us to this guy named Snoop Doggy Dogg on classic singles "Nuthin But A G Thang" and "Dre Day". Snoop's style in rapping has a singing esque to it, his flow was like no other, he could ride beats like it was nuthin and it was so silky smooth.
Doggystyle is Snoop's BEST ALBUM of his entire career. He has never been able to duplicate or rejuvinate this kind of album ever again. Snoop had lyrics back then (not saying he doesn't in the present), but his lyrics were brand new and very relevant. I think his problem rite now in rapping is the fact that he has never changed which is why he has become very tiresome and evry predictable. Doggystyle is an album that can fully represent Westcoast music all on its own. The production was handled soley by the one and only Dr. Dre and this is G-Funk at its primitive best. All tracks are worth listening too, and some are just straight KRAAAAAZZZZYYY that you'll just keep hitting repeat over and over and over. It's 2009 now and over 15 years later, this album still sounds great. This album is a definitive classic and every music lover needs this album in their collection. The only problem I can think of this album is the constant unecessary cursing and nasty sexual content, but I mean c'mon the title of the album is warning enough LOL.
Top Tracks
1) Who Am I (Whats My Name)? - Dr. Dre's best beat ever created for Snoop. The second the song starts, you'll just start banging your head until you head pops off. Snoops lyrics are straight forward RAW. and you'll wish he can rap like this again. 10/10
2) Ain't No Fun (If The Homies Can't Have None) - this is my personal favorite off the album. I would consider this ladies song on the album even though it is quite negative towards women. The song features the early begnnings of 213 which conists of "Snoop Dogg, Nate Dogg & Warren G) as well as Kurupt in his prime as well. The song is in one word "NASTY" haha. the lyrics are all sexual but its pretty funny and direct. The prodcution is so smooth that you can't help but fall in love with. 10/10
3) Gin & Juice - Everyone knows this track. This is Snoop's signature track basically outlining "a day in a life of Snoop doggy dogg". This is Classic Westcoast. 10/10
4) Doggy Dogg World - This is the R&B track of the album. I absolutely love the overall feel of the song, cuz its such a laid back chill song. The hook of the song will grab you right away. Great track in general. 10/10
5) Murder Was the Case - this track took me a while to like, but I love it now. I will technically name this the sequel of song "Deep Cover" just without Dr. Dre. The production is the darkest on the album, but still has the typical westcoast synths in it as well as bumpy basses. This is Snoop's most gangsta track on the album. 9.5/10 |

WHY? |
|
I'm truly dumbfounded as to how this load of garbage was ever allowed into the public. The lyrics and messages of this album are so repulsive and wrong! Am I the only one who finds this utterly DISGUSTING???? I LOVE hip-hop, REAL hip-hop, not "Ah luhv mah greelz 'N mah bychiz 'N mah chaaainz 'N mah blang blang" rap, but HIP-HOP, and I must say this album is more of a disgrace to music in general than Sadam Hussein was to the human race. Get real! |
