Excellent live Floyd video |
Pink Floyd's second concert video entitled Delicate Sound of Thunder was released in June of 1989 (the satellite album was released in November of 1988).
The album (and video) was recorded and filmed over five nights at the Nassau Coliseum in New York in August of 1988 (the end of the regular Momentary Lapse tour '87-'88 and directed by video director Wayne Isham (Bon Jovi, Rolling Stones, Queensryche, etc.).
The band would tour Europe again in 1989/90 in support of Delicate Sound with the tour called Another Lapse.
The band first attempted to record a live album and video in November of 1987 in Atlanta, GA but the band were not up to par. Subsequently, they tried again in the summer of 1988. As a result, a great live album and video.
The album and video has superb live versions of "On The Turning Away" and One of These Days". The fans' much reviled track "The Dogs of War" is superior to its studio counterpart with Nick Mason playing drums this time and Rick Wright playing on keyboards like he did in the old days (the two are the only two original Floyd members who did every tour) and of course David Gilmour's vocals and superb guitar work. The film on this track is breath taking with the German Shepard dogs running with the yellow eyes as if they were possessed by Satan himself. Other standouts are "Wish You Were Here" and "Learning To Fly". Some tracks are slightly edited like "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" and "Comfortably Numb".
The video features material not on the album like "Signs Of Life", "On the Run", a spellbinding "The Great Gig in the Sky" and of course the superb "One Slip". "Money" was available on only the US and Canadian video versions of Delicate Sound but not the UK edition.
This video is unfortunately now out-of-print and the group have no plans to release this film which is a sacrilege as some liked this better than 1995's PULSE!!!!
The video did well for a live concert video as it went Multi-Platinum and is a great document of Floyd's reunion tour.
I first got this video in January of 1993 and went through two copies and am holding on to them.

Video Captures Pink Floyd Live For The First Time Bathed In A Sea Of Sound And Light |

This concert movie featuring Pink Floyd during their 1987-88 world tour in support of A Momentary Lapse Of Reason never ceases to delight both the ear and the eye. The video is actually better than the audio release. It was filmed on location at Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, New York from August 19-23, 1988. Everything you'd expect from a Pink Floyd concert is captured right here from flying pigs to brilliant lights to colorful animation. David Gilmour and company seem to be having the time of their lives and why not! They are finally free from the dictatorial grasp of Roger Waters who previously controlled the songwriting and direction of the group. They can now express their musical ideas in their own way. If you've never seen Pink Floyd in concert before, buy this video today and enjoy! You won't regret it. |

Best Pink Floyd DVD I own |

I saw this concert in Phoenix and was blown away. This is a good record of the music and general feeling of the experience. I ordered the DVD thru a E Bay seller. It is in PAL format with Dolby 5.1 and mixed perfectly. By the way the PAL format works on my Toshiba DVD upconverting player thru MDMI and s-video so as you can tell I am a happy man. I like it better than pulse and all the crap the director put in that takes away from the Floyd experience. This is pretty clean and actually shows the guitar solos unlike Pulse. Perhaps they will release a new version of this concert minus all the '80's stuff that takes away from the musicians. We can only hope. |

Yet Another Movie? |

I have the DSOT CD, and really would like the DVD now, but every track listing I see for the DVD omitts "Yet Another Movie." Why would it be on the CD and not on the DVD? Please let me know if I'm misinformed.. as this is the only detail preventing me from purchasing. |

Delicate Sound of Thunder is still the best ever |

I have to agree with J Hunter that this is the best Floyd video ever. The beautifully crafted cinematography, effortlessly flowing from scene to scene... looks like Spielberg and Lucas with an unlimited budget. And the music? Time... Comfortably Numb... enough said. Pulse, on the other hand, looks like it was shot on a cheap camcorder, by someone who snuck into the concert. Don't get me wrong... the music is wonderful... High Hopes (from Pulse) is one of my top 5 all-time favorites. But the photography... the lighting is garish... reminds me of the earliest videos where they just strobed the bands with nightmarishly bright colors. And there was way too much time spent showing abstract footage on the big screen, (which to me, is just distracting) and not enought time on the band. Sombody criticized DSoT for spending too much time on Gilmour... and I would have liked a little more time on Mason and Wright... but after all, Gilmour's guitar is the heart and soul of Floyd, the musical "voice" of the band. And he is the lead singer. I got tired of waiting for the DVD to come out, so I made my own from the VHS tape. Its still an incredible visual feast. |
