If you can get past its thick layer of syrup and molasses, Secondhand Lions reveals itself as a thoroughly decent family film that anyone can enjoy. It gets a little sappy sometimes, but there's something to be said for a movie in which Michael Caine and Robert Duvall play eccentric old brothers who take the easy approach to fishing: instead of a peaceful rod and reel, they use 12-gauge shotguns. When 14-year-old Walter (Haley Joel Osment, teetering on puberty) spends an eventful summer with his great-uncles on their vast Texas farmland (he's been dumped there by his delinquent mom, played by Kyra Sedgwick), he soon discovers they've lived lives full of adventure, excitement, passion, and mystery. Either that or they're old-time bank robbers with a long criminal record, and writer-director Tim McCanlies (who invested similar warmth into The Iron Giant) does a nice job of concealing the truth until the very end. Full of enriching lessons and homespun humor, Secondhand Lions has more substance than most family films. If you enjoyed Holes, you'll probably enjoy this movie, too. --Jeff Shannon |

Secondhand Lions has never been given the publicity that I think it deserves. It is a classic, a feel good movie, perfect for all ages and great for a night when one is tired or a little blue. |

SECONDHAND LIONS is without a doubt a moving and thought provoking movie. In a day where movies mostly bore me or depress me, this movie needs to be seen by everyone. I admit I am in my early 50's and have always been an old soul, but you really should see this movie! HATS OFF tot he director, cast and writers, great job! |

Hilarious movie |

This was a great movie start to finish. I am so glad i bought it. Michael Caine with a Texas accent is enough all by itself but then you have Robert Duvall as well and a wonderful story. Great directing in this one too. A must see. |

Wonderful film, if a bit dubious |
This film made me laugh from the inside and left me happy. This is what a movie experience is meant to be. The humor is not crass, the characters quirky, and the main character holds the plot together nicely.
Parts of the film seem a little far-fetched, but that only contributes to its likeability in my eyes. It's clearly the product of someone's imagination, uncluttered by mainstream garbage.
An enjoyable family movie, just don't expect it to hold any lessons on honesty :-) |

Thank you! |
|
Not only was this movie entertaining but educational. Somewhere along the way, it seems people have forgotten the most important values in life. To the producers of the movie.....thank you for that reminder. |
