Editorial Reviews for  'Californication - Season One'

Description
Sophisticated and unique, this comedy centers on novelist Hank Moody (David Duchovny) who struggles to raise his 13-year-old daughter, while still carrying a torch for his ex-girlfriend. His obsession with truth-telling and self destructive behavior -- drinks drugs and relationships -- are both destroying and enriching to his career.

"You can’t always get what you want." The Rolling Stones may have said it best, and it seems to be writer Hank Moody’s theme song. David Duchovny (X Files) was born to play this sly, sarcastic, self-loathing, and--despite all the meaningless sex, booze, and fist fights--kind character. Writer Moody hates the Los Angeles world he lives in; a world that turned his sharp best-seller into a cheesy date movie, where his young daughter and should-have-been wife (Natascha McElhone) are slipping away into the hands of a rich play-it-safe guy, and where everything he truly wants seems just out of his reach. But the man hasn’t lost all hope. "Happy endings may get a bad rap, but they do happen," he assures his daughter. "And when they do, they’re just as true as the unhappy ones." One can’t help but hope Hank finds his happy ending, because it's with his family that his soft side surfaces. Hank takes no shame in trying to woo back his "wife" Karen, even if it is in front of her new fiancé. He knows he’s meant to be with her--plain and simple--and there’s a glint in her eye that always makes you wonder if she’s really thinking the same thing. And his daughter Becca? Well, any guy would melt against this guitar-wielding cutie (played by the adorable Madeleine Martin), but Hank really captures the "I’ll kick a lot of ass for my daughter" mentality that so many dads harbor. He’s also fully prepared to drop a gorgeous woman at a moment’s notice to heed his daughter’s call.

The rest of the cast, including Evan Handler (Sex and the City) and Pamela Adlon (Lucky Louie), provide some surprisingly interesting and hilarious side stories. Just when it seems situations in this show can’t get any more ludicrous or disgusting, they most certainly do. That’s the beauty of it. Californication is a dark, coarse, edgy adult comedy. It’s also very real, and quite intelligent. --Jordan Thompson

A New series for David Duchovny
right now i am going through weeds withdrawl waiting for season 4 to come out on dvd. when californication first came out, i thought i would not like it. david is most famous for his role as fox mulder on the X-files, but in this role, he has moved beyond chasing aliens and looking for his sister, samantha. he really shines as hank moody. after watching season one, he is trying to be a good father to his daughter, becca, and at the same time, trying to woo becca's mother, karen. the humor and the wit shine through and punctuate the series. i am not going to ruin the season ending, but when you watch the "last waltz," episode 12, you will be cheering.

Southern Belle
I wasn't quite prepared for the nudity and the language, however, when I got past it, I found the show to be excellent. The plot line is superb. It's supposed to be a comedy-drama but I found it to be very sad. I'm a David Duchovny fan and, although the Hank Moody character is so different from Fox Mulder, Duchovny is a superb actor and he's still gorgeous at the age of 48. I'm not sure yet if I will order the second season.

A Man Named Hank
We loved this series on Showtime, and we are currently enjoying season two. David Duchovny's character of 'Hank' is sort of a modern day Bukowski character...he's a writer who drinks too much, sleeps around too much, and writes too little. This is very adult humor, but all of the parts are acted pretty well, and after a while you kind of root for Hank to win, despite all of his obvious flaws. Recommended for fans of Duchovny, or Bukowski-like story telling.

Dont watch
Starts off with potential until the second season. How many episodes can you possibly make the same with just a different name?

Warning: Comedy, Sex, drugs, bad language OH MY!!!
Californication is a wild, funny, and an enteraining show about Hank Moody a washed-up writer from NY who moved to LA to make it big. It didn't work out that well and as a result he cannot write!

Hank drinks and womanizes while trying to win back his ex while raising his 12-year-old daughter. He is also being blackmailed from the ex's boyfriend's daughter.

WARNING: There is a lot of fornication is almost every episode and a lot of swearing that probably isn't necessary. You can make a great show without showing every sex scene and saying the F word in every other sentence in which it gets annoying after a while but don't let that stop you from checking out this show.

To Duchovny fans you will see the softer side in Hank's character as he has shown in The X-files and Return to Me in which makes him attractive.

The relationship with his daughter and his ex that is sweet. There is a connection there that no one can describe unless you have had experienced both. This is what keeps me tuning into this show. I will definitely check out the season 2 when it comes out on DVD!
