Customer Reviews for  'Lionel Pennsylvania Flyer'

Lionel Pennsylvania Flyer
I purchased this for my 5 year old son who is autistic. It is very durable and easy for him to connect. I have tried smaller scale trains but the O scale is the perfect size for younger kids. Lionel trains may be pricey but the are built well and worth the money.

Durable, Easy, Fun
I grew up with Lionel, always had great experiences, and wanted to buy my son his first set. I know Lionel has gone through a seven year bankruptcy restructuring; so I don't doubt that people have had problems with customer service. But I see no difference between the quality of this set I bought for my son and the great quality I experienced in my own childhood. Sure, the engine is heavy. It's a Lionel! Go to WalMart and buy some plastic train if you want a light engine. Lionel makes durable and authentic metal engines. It can take a novice a few minutes to get used to attaching the tracks; but they are not difficult to attach. They are very precise, which is part of Lionel's excellent quality. They form a tightly fitted layout. Similarly, one needs to be careful when placing the cars on the tracks to make sure they are fitted properly; but they are not difficult. One just needs to pay attention to what one is doing, because the cars are designed to allow the wheels to turn around corners, so one needs to align the wheels when placing the cars on the tracks. Some young children are likely to get frustrated; but most children enjoy having to pay attention to this detail; and any adult who would complain about this simply is impatient. If you are looking for additional products to buy with this basic set I recommend the following. A cheap way to add to your child's experience is to buy Lionel's barrel pack, which runs about $6. This allows them to load this set's flat car. In addition, the track is a basic oval; so older children often get bored with it quickly. If your child is likely to want more than this, I recommend getting the figure 8 extension set. I bought both at the same time, gave my son this set, then brought out the figure 8 extension after a couple weeks. A natural next addition will be to buy a trestle set to allow part of the figure 8 to be an elevated track. But I recommend waiting a while before buying extra engines. Once you "open this door," additions get very expensive and add relatively little to your child's Lionel experience. So if you find yourself adding on to this set, I recommend adding track and trestles until your track layout easily accommodates two engines running at the same time, or at least has a siding track where your additional engine can park. Then the additional engine adds to your child's experience with his or her layout. I hope this has helped you decide for yourself whether or not this Lionel set is for you. While their trains are a bit expensive, I think Lionel trains remain the type of toys upon which fond memories are built.

DON'T BUY FROM THIS SELLER
I purchased this item off of Marketadvisory last night as a Christmas present. I got a confirmation from Marketadvisory, only to get a follow-up e-mail from the seller. It has been backordered to the 21st. These things happen. So, I called to see if there was some way I could pick it up, get it overnighted (buy something similar, etc. I was told that it was my fault for buying through Marketadvisory rather than their site. (The woman was also incredibly rude). I was also told that they would do nothing to be helpful and that if I wanted help I could go to Marketadvisory. I have purchased many things from Marketadvisory sellers and I understand that things happen around Christmas time. But, to be told, essentially, that Marketadvisory purchasers are not welcome is unacceptable. I will check to make sure that this seller never offers something I am going to purchase.

Three years in...
Had this set for three years. I only put it out for the holidays. One of the other reviewers mentioned that it's a bit heavy for the motor and this is quite true. There is no 'slow' operation. The curved track pieces could be manufactureda bit better...they can be a challenge to get together. All in all, though, it's a decent starter set and while I wouldn't steer someone to this particular set, I wouldn't steer them away from it either.

Best to look to another brand
We've had the same set with Christmas colors for three years. After the first year, the "whistle" unit (housed in the tender) no longer worked. And about 10 minutes into running the second year, the engine stopped. Found that the engine was wired so that the power wire was rubbing a drive wheel.

The engine is built with an underpowered motor, such that a fairly high power setting is required to get it moving and then it runs fast; there is only a tiny operating range before it will fly off on a curve. The engine is very top heavy and the curves have a tight radius to them. Finally, when taking the entire engine apart this year found the plastic gears flimsy, badly supported and worn even with recommended oiling.

I still have some of my fathers Lionel trains and these can still be counted on to run today; the new stuff being sold is meant to be in the trash quickly.
