Customer Reviews for  'HP Deskjet 6940DT Color Printer'

Great printer for low volume usage
This printer replaces an HP DeskJet 895Cxi, which could handle ink cartridges about twice the size available for this printer for about a 50% increase in price. Before buying a printer that would print less economically than its predecessor, I researched other printers online first and found an HP inkjet printer with individual ink cartridges for each color and didn't have the print head built into the cartridge. Unfortunately, so many user reviews reported a common problem with the printer's ink supply system that I opted for simplicity and reliability over potential economy and thus "settled" for the 6940dt... partly because I also have an old economical laser printer, too. Since then, I have not regretted that decision.

This is my first network printer and the networking features have worked very well. The printer pauses about 5-10 seconds before it starts printing but that delay may be due to the print server. I say that because I use an Ubuntu Linux PC partly as a print server for my laser printer and the laser printer now exhibits a similar delay before it starts printing. (BTW... Ubuntu supplies a decent HP print driver for the 6940dt.)

I never had an HP printer that didn't have an occasional paper feed or jam problem and this one is no different. What makes the problem more frustrating with this printer is that the printer also comes with a larger auxiliary paper tray, which is perfect for plain paper printing. The problem is that many apparent misfeeds turn out to be the printer trying to feed from the main paper tray. It seems that many applications, especially Microsoft Office, override the print driver's default paper tray and select the main tray. Since the printer doesn't indicate which tray it tries to feed from and the feeding sounds for both trays are quite similar, it's never obvious if there is a true misfeed unless there is different paper in the main tray.

The automatic duplex feature is nice but very slow. Apparently, the printer pauses after printing the first side so the ink can dry before it reverses the page to print the other side. Also according to HP, automatic duplexing isn't an available option for Windows 98 SE.

The Pictbridge interface works better than expected! I especially like printing multiple photos on a single sheet using the camera's DPOF settings. Since the main paper tray automatically senses paper type and size, the printer will automatically adjust the image size(s) to fill the page.

Since I have been printing less colored output lately, I've been very happy with this printer and especially all its features for what I consider a low cost for the hardware. If ink cartridge prices were lower and there was a print tray selection indicator, I would have rated this printer a 5.

HP printer
I like HP printers better than others I have had. It doesn't always work as well as the last HP printer I had. It seems to jam more easily, especially with envelops.
