Panasonic is the One
I am not a Hi Def fanatic...so I had no expectations on the HD picture. I only use component cables (red blue green) not HDMI and the picture is very pretty on my Sony Bravia. I cant imagine a TV image can look much better. So I am pleased with this aspect.

I bought the unit mainly to transfer VHS shows to DVD and to have a DVD recorder. For these tasks the unit is great! When I play VHS tapes and when I record VHS to DVD the unit really improves the picture quality.
If you have several shows on the VHS it will insert a break between them so you can see individual shows after recording.

I only use Verbatim DVD's (they are the best) and it plays them no problem whether I recorded them from another unit or my computer. You cant use RW DVD because once it is finalized to play on other units you cannot re-record on the disc. Well it will accept RW disks no problem but you just cant re-write them so may as well just get the write once -R.

Just like a tape I can set the record length 1,2,4,6 or 8 hours, record a few programs take it out without finalizing and put more shows on that disk later. You can pause during record and the re-start is fast and smooth. If you stop record start it again it will insert a chapter break, if you pause it it will not.

It has a few neat features like watching what you are recording while it is still recording. And it pretty much tells you on its screen whats happening and if theres a problem whats wrong. It does take a while to start up...45 sec or more so I just keep it on all the time.

Occasionally it will not change drives. Annoying but you just have to unplug and plug back in after 30-60 sec. After dealing with my Toshiba DVD VCR this is a pleasure!! (Surprising because the Toshiba portable DVD player is FANTASTIC!!)

I was always a Panasonic fan and now I am encouraging others to join me.
This unit...again,NOT an HD nut...is perfect for me and I intend to buy another. (When I really want a high quality Hi Def picture...
I go outside)

Not worth the trouble
Do not buy this product. It works for about two weeks and then has problems from viewing a dvd/vhs to recording a program. You can send it in for service, but the service at Panasonic is slow. We have owned this unit for 4 months, it has been in service 3 times and we have physically had it in-between for 6 weeks, all this other time Panasonic has had it at their repair center and can't seem to fix it. I suggest buying SONY, not panasonic.

Great Product
So far it does everything I bought it for.
Cons:
Slow response time on remote.
The unit has frozen a couple times. I just unplug it and wait a minute and then plug it back in and it works fine after that.

Works well to transfer VHS to DVD
Not sure whether this is the same model or not, but this is the product it brought me to when I linked from my invoice.

I purchased the "Panasonic DMR-EZ47VK Up-Converting 1080p DVD-Recorder/VCR Combo with Built In Tuner" in October 2007. At that time, it was about $250 and Marketadvisory was the retailer. I didn't start using it for tape transfer until some time in March 2008.

I did not buy it for the HD tuner, so I can't speak to that. However, it has worked really well so far in transferring VHS tapes to DVD and also directly recording to DVD from cable. I use the rewritable DVDs for "time shifting" TV programs. I use the +R DVDs for permanent collections. Finalization process works well and the DVDs recorded on the Panasonic have worked on Toshiba and SONY DVD players.

The only problem I've had is that sometimes it doesn't properly divide between programs/episodes when transferring from VHS. A few times it taped entirely through a 6-hour tape without dividing it into the 6 hour-long episodes. Other times, it failed on the divide and I had to restart it when I discovered it. For much of what I've done so far, I have actually monitored it and watched the programs as they were transfering. It was fun seeing the programs again and it allowed me to monitor the start and finish of each episode to ensure a smooth transition during the divide. I did a manual finalization at the end (instead of auto finalization), so I could edit the episode and disk names.

I just hope it lasts long enough for me to transfer my very large VHS collection to DVD. Cross my fingers and hope I haven't jinxed it.
